Challenge

Previously, Arriva Sweden’s IT infrastructure was outdated and unstable, plagued by poorly maintained legacy systems.

The instability led to frequent downtime and delayed report submissions, resulting in hefty penalties from transport operators. The ongoing digitization trend within the transport industry posed a significant challenge for Arriva, whose antiquated IT system could not keep up with the increasing demand for enhanced data for bus drivers, traffic planners, and transport operators like Storstockholms Lokaltrafik.

Solution

In collaboration with Euvic, Arriva embarked on a comprehensive IT overhaul, initiating the migration of numerous Windows servers, including essential SQL and Oracle databases, to the cloud. Euvic optimized existing applications for cloud compatibility and shifted multiple SQL and Oracle databases to Relational Database Services to benefit from managed services.

Following the stabilization and modernization of their IT environment, Arriva proceeded to construct digital solutions to enhance and streamline their train management services, thus securing additional service contracts. Euvic provided two development teams to finalize Arriva’s digital ‘train portal.’

In the third phase, Arriva implemented the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) to boost collaboration between IT and business departments and maximize value from digitization. They also opted to digitize their bus operations. Euvic furnished the majority of the development resources along with a system team that designed and implemented a Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipeline. This pipeline facilitated improved development speed and quality while reducing operational costs.

Result

Since the bus traffic management portal’s launch in June 2019, Arriva has experienced zero downtime and minimal technical issues. The operational costs of the new platforms are roughly a third of the train portal costs.

Arriva is now ideally positioned for continued growth in Sweden and has completely revolutionized its operational methods. New technologies now serve as critical business facilitators, a stark contrast to the situation in 2016. Euvic’s instrumental role in the digital transformation has provided Arriva with high-quality, cost-effective development, and infrastructure teams and significantly cut operational costs through CI/CD pipeline implementation.
